Why is it so important to control our thoughts?

“Next to murder in seriousness was adultery, expressly forbidden by God. Jesus also noted the seriousness of lust. … The thoughts precede the actions: ‘For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.’ (Prov. 23:7.) Jesus was teaching accountability for thoughts as well as actions; either of these could cost one’s salvation. Controlling the mind and impulses could obliterate the outward commission of serious sin” (Farley, “Appearance of Christ to the People of Nephi,” 155–56).
