“There Shall Be No Disputations Among You Because He That Hath the Spirit of Contention is Not of Me”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

The Lord commands us to be peacemakers (see 3 Nephi 12:9). Paul explains, “Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:14–15). The Lord gives unto us the commandments and doctrines pertaining to eternal life so that there will be no disputations among us (see 3 Nephi 18:34). When people become truly converted, there are no contentions among them (see 4 Nephi 1:2), for they will deal justly one with another, a sure sign that they are trusting and living by the Spirit (see D&C 11:12). Remember that it is the devil, the father of contention, who stirs people to argue over points of the Lord’s doctrine (see D&C 10:63). The Lord has made it clear that we should not contend one with another (see D&C 136:23). King Benjamin counsels us to beware of contention and guard against obeying the evil spirit (see Mosiah 2:32) or allowing our children to fight and quarrel one with another (see Mosiah 4:14). When we have the spirit of contention, we allow the devil to have influence in our lives rather than the Lord (see 3 Nephi 11:29). The sure way to overcome contention and strife is to have the love of God in our hearts (see 4 Nephi 1:15–16). Therefore, let us be loving and seek peace while standing for truth and righteousness as directed by the Spirit.
