“This Is My Doctrine”

Brant Gardner

Rhetoric: The movement of this discourse is artfully turned in these two verses. The discussion begins because there are disputations over baptism. Jesus notes that contention is of the devil, not of him. In these two verses, he creates a contrasting pair: “this is not my doctrine” and “I will declare unto you my doctrine.” That doctrine returns to the theme of repentance and baptism—not as a subject of contention but as the heart of Jesus’s doctrine.
