How to Become Sons and Daughters Unto Christ

Daniel H. Ludlow

After introducing himself as the Creator of the heavens and earth, the Savior informs the people "as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons of God; and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name." (3 Nephi 9:17.) The Savior's statement in this scripture is quite similar to a statement he made to the Brother of Jared over 2,000 years earlier as a pre-earthly spirit: "In me shall all mankind have light, and that eternally, even they who shall believe on my name; and they shall become my sons and my daughters." (Ether 3:14).

King Benjamin also taught his people how they could become the sons and daughters of Christ. After telling his people about the life and mission of the Savior, he encouraged his people to enter into a covenant to accept Christ and to serve him (this covenant evidently included the ordinance of baptism). Then he said: ". . . because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you." (Mosiah 5:7.)
