The loss of life was unavoidable. As already noted, Mormon would have seen these deaths typologically, paralleling the destruction of the wicked at the Triumphant Messiah’s return. It is, after all, the same Messiah. Thus, the wicked (and Mormon has taken pains to establish their presence, even their dominance) must be destroyed at this first coming.
