“Now There Were Many of Those Who Testified, Were Taken and Put to Death Secretly by the Judges”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

No officer, according to Nephite law, had power to condemn a person to death without the authority of the governor, but many of the prophets were put to death secretly by the judges. The knowledge of such action was withheld from the proper authority until after the prophet's death.
