When Lehi and his colony left Jerusalem in about 600 B.C., their leaving was evidently kept secret from the other people in Jerusalem. Mormon tells us concerning Lehi's departure, "no one knew it save it were himself and those whom he brought out of that land." (3 Nephi 5:20.)
