“Gathering the Righteous”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

This episode in Nephite history provides a thought-provoking illustration of the wisdom of heeding modern-day revelation, where the Lord states: “Behold, it is my will, that all they who call on my name, and worship me according to mine everlasting gospel, should gather together, and stand in holy places” (D&C 101:22)—meaning the stakes of Zion, the righteous homes of the Saints, and the holy temples of God. The story also reminds us of the timely prudence in laying up sufficient provisions for a rainy day. As for the Nephites, they soon return to their homes without the imminent threat of attack and disaster. We can remember Lachoneus as a righteous and wise leader who, along with his associates, secures the liberty and peace of his nation. Concludes Mormon: “And now it was Gidgiddoni, and the judge, Lachoneus, and those who had been appointed leaders, who had established this great peace in the land” (3 Nephi 6:6).
