The Nephites are certainly placing a large army in the field for their defense. As part of the organization of this army are multiple chief captains. This suggests that under each “chief captain” there were other captains. Above all of these is the general, although he receives the same title of chief captain (albeit “chiefest” chief captain). The name of this man is Gidgiddoni.
Variant: The description “chief captain” was added in 1981 to reflect the text in the Printer’s manuscript. Beginning with the 1830 edition the word chief was missing, even though it had been in the Printer’s manuscript. (Book of Mormon Critical Text. FARMS, 1987, 3:999).
