“The Leader and the Governor of This Band of Robbers: Giddianhi”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Giddianhi is the bold and audacious leader of the Gadianton robbers in the period following the birth of the Savior. The context is as follows: The people are beginning to lapse into their prideful and wicked ways, forgetting the marvelous signs and wonders given at Jesus’ birth. Concurrently, the Gadianton robbers emerge as a threat of growing proportions, requiring the people to take defensive measures for the protection of their families and their rights. In this, the Nephites have some success; however, the robbers continue their forays of destruction and ominously shadow the well-being of the nation. They finally issue an ultimatum: surrender or die.
