What happened to Nephi, the son of Helaman and father of Nephi?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Third Nephi begins with an interesting statement about Nephi the son of Helaman. … [He] ‘departed out of the land, and whither he went, no man knoweth’ (3 Ne. 1:3) and … he ‘did not return to the land of Zarahemla, and could nowhere be found in all the land’ (3 Ne. 2:9). This is reminiscent of a similar passage about Nephi’s great-grandfather Alma the younger. … In Alma’s day the church members speculated that he might have been ‘taken up’ by the Lord as was Moses. Although there is no similar declaration in the Book of Mormon about Nephi the son of Helaman, he was certainly a candidate for translation considering the type of life he led” (Szink, “Just and True Record,” 125).
