“For the Wickedness and Abominations”

Brant Gardner

The next city specifically mentioned is Gideon. The extent of the Nephite apostasy from the gospel must have been extensive indeed if Samuel condemns Gideon for “wickedness and abominations.” Alma, on his missionary journey through the land of Zarahemla, praised Gideon for its faithfulness (Alma 7:3–5). Later when Korihor attempted to spread his version of the worldly religion, which denied the Atoning Messiah, Gideon’s residents banished him (Alma 30:21–29). The Korihor incident was about seventy years before Samuel’s condemnation. In that generation, Gideon has fallen from being so faithful that it repudiated Korihor’s apostasy to being condemned for embracing apostasy.
