Samuel pronounces upon them the same curse that Nephi had (Hel. 7:22–23, 10:11–12). The Nephites are no longer under the protection of the foundational promise since they have violated the requirement to be righteous. Since they will not repent, the Lord withdraws his Spirit (symbolic of his protection), and they are now subject to the curse. Their total destruction will come within four hundred years.
