“I Would That All Men Might Be Saved”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
Such a blessing. is available. It is indeed possible. No person came into this life incapable of gaining salvation. “We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel” (Articles of Faith 1:3). Nephi’s prayer was very similar to Mormon’s: “And I pray the Father in the name of Christ that many of us, if not all, may be saved in his kingdom at that great and last day” (2 Nephi 33:12). At the same time, spiritual casualties are inevitable. The Prophet Joseph Smith explained: “The contention in heaven was—Jesus said there would be certain souls that would not be saved; and the devil said he could save them all” (Teachings, p. 357).
