“Great Mountain”

Brant Gardner

Mormon knows there was a “great mountain” in the place where the city of Moronihah had stood as a result of the destruction immediately preceding the Messiah’s visit to the Nephites in Bountiful (3 Ne. 8:10). The mountain serves a dual purpose in this lament: It demonstrates Yahweh’s power over nature but also alludes, in the midst of appalling destruction, to God’s ultimate gift—the Atoning Messiah.
