“A Voice Came Unto Him Saying:”

W. Cleon Skousen

The mind of Nephi was at one of the lowest ebbtides of his life. He had spent six years in the land northward and returned home with his brother, Lehi, when their message was rejected. But when they reached Zarahemla it was the worst they had ever seen it and everything was under the control of the Gadiantons. As we have just seen, in the deepest mourning Nephi cried out to God and he answered him by revealing that the Gadianton chieftain had just been murdered. The Lord even revealed the solution to the murder which Nephi shared with the people.

But what did it accomplish? The people split into four groups and finally wandered off leaving Nephi all by himself. Here is the way the scripture describes this low point in Nephi's life.

The Lord knew Nephi needed comforting. He and the Lord needed to have a good talk together.
