Redaction: I have argued that the shift in the balance of power was rapid, but that the shift in popular opinion occurred gradually. Nevertheless, it serves Mormon’s editorial purposes to portray a rapid descent into apostasy, which he uses to introduce Nephi’s lament (v. 7).
