“Gadianton Robbers Filling the Judgment–seats, Having Usurped the Power and Authority of the Land”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

The Gadianton band so thoroughly infiltrated every part of society that the government was in their control by about 23 B.C. In powerful imagery, Nephi’s “heart was swollen with sorrow,” wishing he could have lived in a different time. It is these very human kinds of expressions that make the Book of Mormon so believable and compelling. This lament was offered on Nephi’s garden tower.
