“The People Began to Grow Exceedingly Wicked Again and Commit Secret Combination”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

It is amazing, though not surprising, that both groups who were formerly antagonists could prosper so richly and thoroughly when peace prevailed. However, their strength became their weakness as riches corrupted the Nephites, and they set their hearts so much upon their riches that the cycle of apostasy began again. Just as important for our day, we see how secret combinations can exist imperceptibly, beneath the surface as it were, during periods of righteousness, peace, and prosperity, only to emerge again when society begins to decline and they see an opportunity.
