What did Gadianton have in common with previous anti-Christs?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Mormon describes Gadianton, the leader of the band formed by Kishkumen, as ‘exceedingly expert in many words, and also in his craft.’ It is significant that these traits are similar to those found in such anti-Christs as Sherem (see Jacob 7:4), Nehor (see Alma 1:3–6), and Korihor (see Alma 30:12–18). Gadianton’s use of many words and flattery to bring about his evil designs, as in the cases of the anti-Christs, was acquired through the tutelage of Satan. Gadianton was ‘expert in his craft’ because he had been taught and influenced ‘according to the power of the devil’ (Jacob 7:4)” (McConkie and Millet, Doctrinal Commentary, 3:337–38).
