“Many Were Softened Because of Their Afflictions”

Brant Gardner

The story of the Nephites’ struggles against outside cultural influences is not over, even though this conflict is. Mormon points out the very human results of a long war. Some are hardened by their sufferings, while some are softened by those same sufferings. Those who are hardened will not see Yahweh’s hand in their deliverance and will be among the first to dissent again when the opportunity arises. Those whose hearts were softened saw Yahweh’s hand in their salvation and remained even more firmly dedicated to Nephite ideals.
