“The Final Battle Between Moroni and the Lamanites”

Monte S. Nyman

It seems ironic that Captain Moroni’s final battle was fought over the land of Moroni (v. 34). The city of Moroni was built about ten years earlier (see Alma 50:13). It was probably named after Moroni since the Nephites named their cities after the founders (see Alma 8:7). Amalickiah was an apostate Nephite and had caused the war, as Teancum considered (Alma 62:35, see Alma 46:10). Ammoron was his brother and had carried on the apostate wickedness after Amalickiah’s death, as the previous chapters have described (see Alma 52:3). The courage and determination of Teancum to end the life of Ammoron is admirable (v. 36). The short but final tribute to Teancum for having fought valiantly for his country as a true friend to liberty, under the trying circumstances (v. 37), was well deserved. We have but a brief account of the final battle, but it was a decisive victory (v. 38).
