“Moroni Went Forth from the Land of Nephihah to the Land of Lehi”

Brant Gardner

Nephihah was the most important Lamanite stronghold and likely had the largest army. With its fall, Moroni can break the impasse on the eastern frontier. His combined forces are now impressive. Not only did he not suffer fatalities in retaking Nephihah but he also freed the Nephites being held prisoner. Although Mormon does not mention it, it seems likely that the Lamanites in the land of Lehi were aware of Nephihah’s fall. The presence of Moroni’s large army and its impressive victory were probably sufficient reason for the Lamanites in the land of Lehi to see themselves as unable to hold out—hence their flight.
