Nephihah was garrisoned with a large Lamanite army, the survivors of the “innumerable” army that Helaman chased out of Manti and other Lamanite troops (Alma 59:5–8). Perhaps the Lamanites even had numerical superiority. Still, according to Mormon, they were afraid to meet the Nephites on open ground.
