“The Character of Pahoran”

Monte S. Nyman

Although Moroni had been wrong about Pahoran, we must admire Pahoran, for his calmness and demeanor in his reply (v. 9). The natural man would have retaliated in anger and informed Moroni how wrong he was. Instead, Pahoran reaffirmed his commitment to preserve the freedom of his people and resist wickedness even unto bloodshed (vv. 9–10). He also reaffirmed his faith in doing God’s will and placing his trust in him (vv. 11–13). Certainly, Pahoran had faith unto salvation: “An actual knowledge that the course of life which one is pursuing is according to His will” (Lectures on Faith, 3:5). His name could well be added to Ammon and the other sons of Messiah, and Alma and his sons as “men of God” (Alma 48:18).
