“I Seek Not for Power But to Pull It Down”

Brant Gardner

Moroni repeats his threat again. In this letter alone he has threatened Pahoran at least four times (vv. 13–14, 23–24, 27–29, 33). He will march against Zarahemla and depose its rulers if they do not fulfill their rightful obligations. He will be justified in doing this because he follows Yahweh’s commands (or the true Nephite way). While others might try to bring down the leader to usurp his power themselves (as Amalickiah did), Moroni’s only goal is to “pull it down”—“it” meaning, in this case, unrighteously exercised power.

Text: The chapter ends with the termination of Moroni’s epistle. The next chapter will begin with Pahoran’s reply, reflecting Mormon’s sense that one unit has ended and another is beginning.
