“Be Up and Doing”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

What a superb maxim for governing our lives! The phrase epitomizes Moroni’s own philosophy of life. He is a man of action—more importantly, a man of action on the Lord’s business, and according to the principles of righteousness. We should be up—not sitting back idle and passive; we should be doing—not resting on our laurels or waiting to be served by others. Immortality and eternal life take work: “This is my work and my glory,” said the Lord concerning His mission to save and exalt man (see Moses 1:39; emphasis added). Nephi put it this way: “For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do” (2 Nephi 25:23; emphasis added). King Benjamin said: “And now, if you believe all these things see that ye do them” (Mosiah 4:10; emphasis added).
