“The Inward Vessel Shall Be Cleansed First”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Moroni identifies a key factor in the success of building up the kingdom of God: leaders—and we are all leaders in the cause of the Lord—need to operate with pure and noble intent, having “an eye single to the glory of God” (D&C 4:5; 82:19; Mormon 8:15; see also Alma 60:24). The Savior teaches his detractors this same truth: “Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also” (Matthew 23:26). In performing our duty as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we begin with ourselves. We cleanse the inner vessel so that the Spirit of the Lord can impart to us the truth and guidance we need.
