Helaman has had two purposes in writing his lengthy epistle. First, he reports on the military situation, including the miraculous faith of his untrained young men. Second, although he does not say so, he needs reinforcements, and his appeals to Zarahemla have been unproductive. Yet now, he must redistribute his army to protect the four retaken cities. He brings this situation to Moroni’s attention, clearly hoping for assistance.
