Helaman does not mention either a grass/straw covering, nor foxholes, though “rising up” strongly suggests that the Nephites may have used this tactic. Whatever form their concealment took, they had to be out of sight yet able to track the passage of the Lamanite army. The correlation between the hidden unit of two thousand that King Moteuczomah Ilhuicamina used and Helaman’s unit of two thousand (and the reinforcement unit of two thousand) is also interesting.
