“An Innumerable Enemy”

Brant Gardner

Helaman expresses, probably in a muted form compared to his feelings at the time, his frustration with what seems to be the Zarahemla government’s negligence. Moroni, after receiving the letter, responds with similar frustration (beginning ch. 60). What Helaman calls “our embarrassments” is actually a serious threat. An army defending its nation from a huge Lamanite army has received only six thousand men. It was certainly a drop in the bucket compared to the reinforcements he saw the Lamanites receive. He exaggerates the Lamanite force by calling it “innumerable,” but it expresses his feelings about the relative sizes of the two armies.
