“Behold, They Will Fall Upon Them and Destroy Our People”

Brant Gardner

History: In Mesoamerican warfare, spies were not only common, but essential. The Aztecs called them quimichtin “mice,” which rather well captures their dual assignments of being intrusive yet quiet. Quimichtin would speak the language and wear the dress of the people on whom they were spying. There is not enough information to determine whether Nephite spies attempted the same type of infiltration, but obviously the Nephites would have had the same need for military intelligence.
