“The Prisoners' Escape is Explained”

Monte S. Nyman

The guards not having time before to explain their early return from taking the prisoners to the land of Zarahemla (v. 17), it is now told (vv. 28–34). The explanation is sufficient and reasonable and needs no further explanation. The lesson for us is two-fold: First, Gid recognized the hand of God in their lives (v. 35); and Helaman trusted in God that the souls of those slain had entered into the rest of God” (v. 36). A similar promise regarding this two-fold lesson is also given in modern revelation.

21 And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments.
23 But learn that he who doeth the works of righteousness shall receive his reward, even peace in this world and eternal life in the world to come. [D&C 59:21, 23]
