The principle of causing the Lamanites to labor “because it was easy to guard them” (Alma 53:5) was not effective with the large number of prisoners that had been taken. What happened on the way to taking the prisoners down to the land of Zarahemla (Alma 57:16–17) is disclosed below (vv. 30–34).
