The city of Cumeni surrendered, but the Lamanites had not surrendered their fighting spirit. They apparently capitalized on their numerical strength, possibly attempting these breakouts as a secondary strategy to pin down and absorb Nephite energy. As Helaman tells the story, the entire Nephite army is required to keep them under control.
