“Nephites Began to Slay The Lamanites Exceedingly”

Brant Gardner

It is not clear how the leaderless Nephites were able to quickly perceive the effect of Helaman’s attack and take the correct action of re-attacking the Lamanites instead of continuing their retreat. I deduce that, although other captains besides Antipus had fallen, smaller divisions had retained their leaders; these men must have been able to regroup the disoriented Nephites around them. Thus, even though there was no longer a single standard-bearer, the smaller units resumed the initial strategy.
