Memories: The Faith of a Child

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

The faith of a child, like that of the sons of Helaman, makes all the difference in the world. In most every family there are faith-promoting stories. Such has been the case in ours.

I would visit with my children on a regular basis to see how things were going and to see if I could help in some way. We would talk about life, fun times, school, family things, and especially how they felt about Heavenly Father and their prayers—and of course if they had any problems or concerns.

Prior to school each year I would give them a blessing. When special problems or concerns would arise, they would ask for a blessing, especially if they were sick. Brett, our little kindergarten boy, wasn’t feeling so well. He asked, “Daddy, I need a prayer” (meaning a blessing). He had watched the other children receive their blessings for school. That night I gave him a blessing before bed. He slept the night and in the morning was up for scripture time with the family. Kristi remarked, “Brett, I thought you were sick.” He replied, “Didn’t you know Daddy gave me a blessing—I have to be well.” Oh, the faith of a child. You see, they believe. Off to school he went. Yes, faith is the foundation of all righteousness. (Ed J. Pinegar)
