“And Thus They Had Suffered Great Afflictions of Every Kind”

Brant Gardner

The defenders at Judea were so depleted that even two thousand young and ill-trained men were the cause of “great hopes and much joy.” The desperateness of their situation is revealed in the “die trying” statement. They realized that they were the sole hope for Zarahemla’s defense and that retreat was no longer an option. It also indicates that they understood that Moroni’s army was too distant to be of any assistance.
