What should we remember when going to war to defend our country?

Thomas R. Valletta

“As citizens of nations and members of the true church of Jesus Christ, we need to know and follow the Lord’s counsel concerning our involvement in war. … ‘Therefore, renounce war and proclaim peace, and seek diligently to turn the hearts of the children to their fathers, and the hearts of the fathers to the children’ (D&C 98:16). The Lord’s people are peacemakers and their message is one of peace. However, our ability to live in peace depends upon our retention of our freedom under the law. Sometimes our freedoms are threatened and we are required to defend our country, homes, families and God-given rights of free agency” (Otten and Caldwell, Sacred Truths of the Doctrine and Covenants, 2:168).
