Moroni could have easily slaughtered the guards and released the prisoners, a course Mormon explains that Moroni eschewed because he was not bloodthirsty. No doubt this was true. Moroni may also have accepted a code of war that exalted personal combat, but frowned on killing an unconscious man. If Moroni had met the Lamanite guards in the open, he would have had no compunction about fighting them.
