“Ammoron Had a Perfect Knowledge of His Fraud”

Brant Gardner

Ammoron had countered each of Moroni’s accusations but, of course, from his own perspective which Moroni did not find legitimate. Even though Moroni had achieved the basic intent of his letter (the favorable prisoner exchange), he responds angrily, probably letting his emotions override his judgment. Moroni strongly believes that Ammoron, so recently a Nephite, should share Moroni’s own view of Nephite and Lamanite relations. Moroni sees Ammoron’s blatantly Lamanite reasoning as a “fraud,” simply a convenient justification of Ammoron’s adopted worldview. Aside from these irreconcilable differences in perspective, however, Ammoron is clearly using a specious reason in citing Amalickiah’s death. It occurred during a war that was already being waged, so it cannot justify the original attack.
