Alma 54:12 Textual Variants

Royal Skousen
yea and it shall be blood for blood [NULL > yea 0|yea 1ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST] life for life

Here we have two instances of yea in close proximity. Oliver Cowdery initially omitted the second yea in 𝓞, but he caught his error and supralinearly inserted the yea (giving “yea life for life”). There is no change in the level of ink flow, so the correction seems to have been virtually immediate. The text has other instances of yea in close proximity for which Oliver momentarily omitted the second yea, as in the following example where he made the error when he copied the text from 𝓞 into 𝓟:

The critical text will retain the repeated yea in Alma 54:12.

Summary: Retain in Alma 54:12 the corrected reading in 𝓞, “yea life for life”.
