Culture/Text: Mormon quotes Moroni’s letter to Ammoron. We have only occasional clues about literacy among Book of Mormon peoples. Moroni is either literate or has access to scribes (a possibility he does not mention). Obviously, Ammoron is in the same situation. Furthermore, Moroni expects neither the handwriting nor the language of his letter to be an impediment to Ammoron. This assumption may be related to the fact that Ammoron is an apostate Nephite, rather than a completely “foreign” Lamanite. (See commentary accompanying verses 6–8.)
