Mormon’s assessment of the young men never having been at a disadvantage, probably reflects their willingness to work with their parents behind the scene. Their support (v. 19) will be shown by Mormon, as he abridges the record (see v. 22 for a beginning). Their dedication to the truth (vv. 20–21) is attributed to what they had been taught (v. 21). The precept given by Mormon tells the reader that our children should be taught the same commitment to the keeping of the commandments as these stripling soldiers, to help them become children of truth and soberness.
