Why was it vital that the people of Ammon keep their promises to God?

Thomas R. Valletta

“Their wise priesthood leader, Helaman, knew that breaking a covenant with the Lord is never justified” (Scott, “Personal Strength through the Atonement,” 82).

“A covenant is an agreement between God and man. … In these divine agreements, God binds Himself to sustain, sanctify, and exalt us in return for our commitment to serve Him and keep His commandments… .”

Keeping covenants “[produces] the faith necessary to persevere and to do all things that are expedient in the Lord. Our willingness to take upon us the name of Christ and keep His commandments requires a degree of faith, but as we honor our covenants, that faith expands” (Christofferson, “Power of Covenants,” 20–21).
