This situation exists because the Ammonites placed themselves under oath never to take up arms again; many of them allowed themselves and their families to be killed rather than break that oath. (See commentary accompanying Alma 24:11.) The depth of their conversion and their willingness to die created a religious bond that made them, for all political, religious, and probably social purposes, Nephites. Their safety was a matter of honor to the Nephites.
