Morianton, Nephite Rebel

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Morianton was a Nephite who caused a limited rebellion among the people beginning in the year 68 BC. At the heart of the contention was a claim by Morianton’s people that part of the neighboring community of Lehi belonged to them. This heated conflict stood out in sharp contrast with the prevailing conditions of the day, for Moroni had brought about the restoration of peace in the land after several years of warfare. Since the people of Lehi inform Moroni of the problem, Morianton leads his followers into the land northward and thus avoids any conflict with Moroni’s forces. However, Morianton, “being a man of much passion” (verse 30), makes the mistake of beating one of his maid servants, who comes to Moroni’s camp and divulges the whole situation. Based on this new intelligence, Moroni sends Teancum and his army to head off the forces of Morianton, who is killed during the ensuing battle. The people of Morianton then covenant to maintain peace with their neighbors and are “restored to their lands” (verse 36).
