“The Assurance of Protection”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

In these preparations of the Nephites, we see a parallel for our own defensive strategy on behalf of our families. In his righteousness, Moroni is relentless in expanding and improving his preparations for defeating the enemies of his people. He constantly does more and more to prepare for battle. Individuals are equipped with breastplates, arm-shields, and thick clothing—all of which intimidates and frightens the enemy (see Alma 43:18–21). This personal preparation can be compared to putting on the armor of God (see Eph. 6:11–17; D&C 27:15–18). Moroni, having better prepared his people individually, then takes special care to make their environment—the cities and strongholds—safer and more impregnable by digging up large mounds, placing tall timbers, and creating large moats or ditches around their fortifications (see Alma 50:1–6). This kind of preparation can be compared to making our homes a place of refuge from the world. Is our home a sanctuary for the Spirit? Is our home decorated with gospel themes and reminders? Is our home free from contention? Are scripture study and prayer part of our everyday home life? Are there standards in place to protect participants from questionable TV and Internet exposure? In reality, is our home a safe place for our children where they can learn how to avoid the snares and wiles of the devil? We can be wise like Moroni as we prepare to defend our families and help them resist temptation and gain eternal life.
