“Helaman and His Brethren Were No Less Serviceable”

Brant Gardner

Having mentioned Alma’s sons, Mormon specifically names Helaman “and his brethren” as carrying out a function parallel to Moroni’s military achievements. These righteous men “were no less serviceable” as they preached the gospel, thereby achieving peace in the land. Their father had apparently taught them that the best way to calm contentions was through the preaching of the word (Alma 31:5).

History: Mormon attributes to their preaching four years of peace, meaning internal peace. External conflict, caused by wars with the Lamanites, continued; but internal resistance subsided for four years (Alma 50:25).
