“Moroni Caused the Title of Liberty to Be Hoisted Upon Every Tower”

Brant Gardner

Moroni causes replicas of the title of liberty to be placed on “every tower which was in all the land, which was possessed by the Nephites.” This location in each Nephite city made the banner easily visible, a visual symbol of political-religious affiliation. These “towers” would be Mesoamerican stepped pyramids, central and even sacred locations for each community. The banners confirmed the people’s identity. Although banners are not mentioned earlier in the Book of Mormon, they well may have been used earlier as battle flags. Moroni’s use of them in peacetime to immediately identify the politics and religion of each city may have been another of his strategic innovations.
